My Digital Footprint

The beginning!

For the past three {or four} years I have said to myself I will start a blog and till now, when it has become a course requirement, I have been dragging my feet. I must say however that I am extremely glad to have taken my time to get to this point…

The first thing I had to do was Google myself. Typing your own name into that search box is definitely a game changer. Not to my surprise there wasn’t much to find. I am at the top of the search results which was rather funny to see, that is my Twitter account and newly created LinkedIn profile (likely because my name [Lorretta] is spelt with a double r and double t).

From the Google search all one can see of me is my Twitter name, bio and location as my privacy settings are quite tight whilst my LinkedIn will show the public everything I have put on there about myself. It’s not really a big deal as the point is to showcase yourself to the working world but I do feel a little violated.

Please, no pictures!”

There isn’t much about me published on the web but the funniest thing (funny weird and not funny haha) is that when you go into images there is not a single picture of me to be found. I have posted pictures on my Twitter and Instagram, which doesn’t come up in the Google search, but none of these can be seen publicly. Whether this is good or bad I am unsure, but I am glad there aren’t any random pictures of me stuffing my face with cake.

Is anybody out there?

Whilst it is good not to have too much of your personal life on the web, I could improve on my digital presence which in many ways reflects who I am in reality (very few people know I exist). How can any employer in the marketing field hire me when they don’t know who I am? It is imperative that I begin to build my personal brand so that others may see who I am.

The goal – cease to be a beige wallflower on tan wallpaper. I can achieve this by taking a more proactive role in making myself visible to the world. Through constant monitoring of my personal online brand I hope to make myself more accessible. This will entail updating my profiles to better reflect my personality and abilities as well as networking by joining groups on LinkedIn.

A brand-ucation

This activity has certainly opened my eyes to personal branding. What you publish on the web, along with everything you comment on or like ‘can and will be used against you’. A great number of people have been fired and arrested (Facebook thieves). Therefore, as a young professional-to-be it is important to be conscious of what you put out there for the world to see.

better tomorrow

Till next time….lebewohl
